Director of Academic Support for Writing & Speaking

Grinnell College is seeking a talented, experienced and versatile educator to serve as the Director of Academic Support for Writing and Speaking in a full-time, 12-month continuing position. This individual will direct the Writing Laboratory, and work collaboratively with other campus entities to improve instruction of writing and speaking. The Grinnell College Writing Lab primarily provides support to students through professional instruction, but also coordinates a cadre of peer writing mentors and provides faculty development opportunities. The successful Director will oversee the operations of the Writing Lab and its professional staff, and in addition be an active advocate on campus for the improvement of instruction of a broad range of verbal communication. The Writing Lab has gradually expanded its support for writing from exclusively the traditional college essay to include speaking and some initial efforts in other media; the Director will be expected to continue this evolution in service. The Director will lead the Writing Lab in confronting the need to provide greater support to English language learners as this segment of Grinnell’s student body grows. The Director will also work directly and creatively with other academic support professionals to identify and intervene with students at risk of academic failure. Responsibilities: The Director is responsible for coordination and supervision of all aspects of the Writing Laboratory. The Director currently supervises a professional staff of four, including hiring and review responsibilities. The Director will be expected to take initiative on selection, training, and support of peer writing mentors, on development of summer faculty development workshops, and on assessment of writing instruction on campus. The Director is responsible for overseeing the Writing Lab’s for-credit curricular offerings that support writing and speaking. The Director is expected to play the dual role of supporter of and advocate for better teaching of writing and speaking across the curriculum through collaborative work with faculty, librarians, and other academic support professionals. Minimum Qualifications As the Director will hold Lecturer status, a PhD or master’s degree in an academic field is required. Five years of experience in teaching of writing, and demonstrated ability to supervise others in an academic setting is expected. A record of effective work with a diverse student body is essential. Experience with residential liberal arts colleges and writing center administration is desirable. In letters of application, candidates should address their vision for a collaborative approach to student writing success utilizing writing professionals, peer mentors, and classroom faculty, and outline their experiences that prepare them to lead the Writing Lab in the directions described above.

Reporting to the Dean of the College (Vice President for Academic Affairs) and the Vice President for College Services, the Director of ITS provides strategic direction and leadership for all ITS functions and is charged with promoting the integration of information and computing services in the teaching, learning and administrative functions of the College. The Director of ITS is directly responsible for constituent relations and will have oversight of daily operational support, project management and strategic technology planning. The Director will offer creative, innovative, ideas to the senior leadership team that will align with the College’s strategic vision and increase the overall effectiveness of the College. The Director will collaborate with leaders on campus, within the city of Grinnell, and around the world to help Grinnell College and the community grow in its adoption and use of technology, and ultimately to further our mission. The Grinnell Environment: Information Technology Services supports 1700 students and 650 employees. ITS provides infrastructure, support, application development, networking, telecommunications, and AV services to its constituents with a budget of over $5 million and a staff of 25 FTE. In addition to the ITS staff, Grinnell maintains a staff of 3 curriculum technology specialists and 25 administrative technology specialists, distributed throughout academic departments. The technology environment is up to date, reliable, and of high quality. A redundant internet connection and up to date fiber network are supported by Cisco network controllers. Ellucian’s Colleague ERP provides the backbone of administrative application services. Blackboard serves as the course management system, Raisers Edge is the fund raising system, and Slate is the student recruitment system. Support operations are based on ITIL processes. Maturity levels throughout the department are managed through COBIT standards. A process orientation is being implemented throughout the ITS organization with particular focus on project management, resource management, project governance, and infrastructure architecture. Job Summary Grinnell College is seeking a talented and versatile mathematics and statistics educator to serve as the Director of the Mathematics Laboratory, a full-time, 9-month continuing position. The Grinnell College Math Lab provides support to students in mathematics and statistics classes through both peer and professional tutoring, mentoring, and classes. The successful Director will be able to work both independently and in close collaboration with faculty in a variety of departments, particularly Mathematics and Statistics, on support of individual students and broader curricular development. The Director will also work directly and creatively with other academic support professionals to identify and intervene with students at risk of academic failure. Responsibilities: The Director is responsible for coordination and supervision of all aspects of the Mathematics Laboratory. Responsibilities include direct tutoring of students in introductory level mathematics and statistics courses; hiring, training and supervision of student tutors and mentors for these courses; and oversight of the Mathematics Laboratory spaces and equipment. The Director will be expected to be in regular contact with faculty teaching these courses, and to collaborate with other on-campus academic resource centers, such as the Science Learning Center. It is expected that the Director will have academic credentials that allow designation as Lecturer, and the Director will offer auxiliary for-credit courses (currently Math Lab 100) for students needing extra work in mathematics. Minimum Qualifications A bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or a closely related field required; a masters degree strongly preferred. At least one year experience teaching or tutoring mathematics, with demonstrated skills in teaching algebra, calculus and/or statistics to beginning students of college level mathematics. In letters of application, candidates should discuss their qualifications for teaching mathematics and statistics in an undergraduate, liberal-arts environment that emphasizes close student-faculty interaction and values diversity.
